Peles Castle

Peles Castle
Peles Castle

The castle is considered by many one of the most beautiful castles in all Europe and in the world .

Peles Castle was built by the prince Carol I de Hohenzollern, who was to become a king as a summer royal residence, on Peles Valley, in 1883.

Peles Castle was the first castle in Europe with central heating and electricity.

Peles Castle was built in wood, stone, bricks and marble and comprises more than 160 rooms. The representative style used is German Renaissance, but one can easily discover elements belonging to the Italian Renaissance, Gothic, German Baroque and French Rococo style.

Rembrandt reproductions line the walls of the king's office at Peles Castle while rows of books in the library conceals a secret passage leading to the 2nd floor of the castle. There is also a gallery of mirrors, and dining room has a leather clad ceiling. In the Florence hall, Michelangelo's reproductions hang below a ceiling carved from glide linden wood. The Venetian room is equally impressive.

Peles Castle is surrounded by seven terraces decorated with statues (sculptured by the Italian, Romanelli), stone-made-wells, ornamental vases and Carara marble. The architects used an abundance of wooden decoration, both for the exterior and for the interior of the castle, which confers a very special quality to the building.

Also Peles Castle shelters one of the most important and most valuable painting collections in Europe, almost 2.000 pieces.

The location of Peles Castle complete the beauty of the Carpathian Mountains.

Vlad Tepes

Targoviste Fortress
Targoviste Fortress

The first mention of the city,  is made by Johann Schiltberger Bavarian crusader in 1396,  who visited the city during the preparations for the battle of Nicopolis.

During the reign of Mircea the Elder the town of Targoviste became the capital of Wallachia.

In 1436, Vlad Dracul, the father of Vlad Dracula Tepes (the Impaler), became ruler of Wallachia and moved to the Royal Court in Targoviste. Due to political reasons, Vlad Dracula Tepes and his brother Radu had to go to the Court of Sultan Murad the 2nd, as hostages. Vlad Dracula Tepes was released when his father died and ruled Wallachia in 1448 (when he was only 17), during 1456-1462, and again in 1476 when he was assassinated. In Targoviste Vlad Dracula became famous for his cruelty.

In 1459, during Sunday Easter, he impaled the old noble men and enslaved the young ones to build his Poenari Fortress. He accused them of murdering his father. Vlad the Impaler  built Chindia Tower, the landmark of the city, for surveillance and defense purposes. It is partly built on a church and is 27 meters high and 9 meters in diameter. The legend tells that once you climb all 122 stairs, you will never forget Targoviste and will come back.

Inside the complex one can see besides the ruins and the Chindia Tower the royal church and "Sfanta Vineri" Church.
